The Importance of Water

Water is always good for your health. It keeps you hydrated, gets rid of waste , keeps your muscles flexing and moving, and gives your skin a healthy glow. But, as a dentist I think about how important it is to your dental health. Sipping on water throughout the day is a key factor to keeping healthy teeth.

The American Dental Association lists 4 reasons WATER is the best beverage for your teeth. I'll break down why these 4 reasons are correct.

1. Its Strengthens Your Teeth

Water with fluoride has been tested and proven to fight tooth decay. A study in the journal, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, found in 2016 children studied with non fluoridated water compared to those with fluoride had more tooth decay.

2. It Keeps Your Mouth Clean

Juice, sports drinks, and soda can leave unwanted sugar on your teeth. This causes a bacteria that increases cavities in your mouth and eats away at your enamel. Water can clean your mouth washing away any left over food or sugar and bacteria. It lessens any acid caused from these sugar drinks. Water can help maintain your mouth in being cavity free.

3. It Fights Dry Mouth

Your mouth's very first defense for itself in saliva! When your mouth is producing less saliva you are prone toward dry mouth. A dry mouth then makes you at risk for tooth decay. Drinking water will prevent dry mouth and keep a healthy level of saliva in your mouth.

4. Has Zero Calories

Sweet drinks and food are high in sugar and calories. These two things put you at a high risk for cavities and other unhealthy consequences. Drinking water has been proven by several studies to help you lose weight. So whenever you think about what drink to pick up, choose a glass of water . Your teeth will thank you for it!
